The Midnight Kitchen Endorses a YES for CKUT!!!

CKUT is a non-profit, campus-community radio station based at McGill University. CKUT provides alternative music, news and spoken word programming to the city of Montreal and surrounding areas, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Hear us at 90.3 MHz on the FM dial, 91.7 by cable, or listen on-line. CKUT is made up of over 200 volunteers working with a staff of coordinators, not just to make creative and insightful radio programming, but also to manage the station. The station operates on a collective management system that includes volunteers in decision-making.

CKUT has been a part of McGill since the 1960s and on the FM dial for almost a quarter of a century, and provides music and spoken word programming 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Programming is done by over 200 volunteers, many of whom are McGill students.  They play music by local, national, and international artists, in genres such as hip-hop, R&B, indie rock, punk, jazz, soca, reggae, ska, folk and blues.  They’ve partnered with festivals like Pop Montreal, Osheaga, and Suoni Per Il Popolo to put on shows featuring some of the best bands around.  CKUT hosts the monthly music series Thursdays {A}live! at Gert’s pub, which features live bands from the McGill community.  They have news and spoken word programming produced by and for McGill students, the arts community, homeless people, LGBTQ people, people with physical and mental disabilities, and many ethnic communities.  CKUT is consistently voted #1 or #2 Radio Station in the Mirror’s Best of Montreal poll.

We love CKUT because we love independent media, internships and work studies, accessible broadcasting, campus and community news and spoken word programming, and of course awesome music and sound art shows that you won’t hear anywhere else on the dial. All this is what makes CKUT one of Montreal’s best stations. And a station renowned world-wide. We are proud as a student organization at McGill to have such a high quality station that we are able to call our own.

A vote of “yes” will make CKUT’s fee non-opt-outable – like the other major media organizations on McGill Campus (The McGill Tribune and The McGill Daily). A non-opt-outable fee will give them the security to continue operating as Montreal’s best campus-community radio station, and to continue delivering important services to McGill students and the entire McGill community.
